FROM VIOLENCE TO ECOFEMINISM: Latin American socio-political climate discussed through Art.

DISCLAIMER: Explicit pictures of rape, violence and nudity related to the discussed subjects

This journal takes the name: "From violence to Feminism". It is an investigative arts based- journalistic project. I interviewed 10 people with varying relations to the Latin America's socio-political landscape. Some are researchers, students, writers and artists. I led the interviews with visual cues, referring to art works by Cuban-American artist/performer; Ana Mendieta, and Mexican contemporary artist Teresa Margolles. The link between the two artists work is their portrayal of violence, especially on women in the post-colonial context of Hispanic America.

The aim being to show to showcase symbols of resistance to the neo-colonial climate of the the world, expressed through so-called “femininity”, and evoke emotions and conversations from the subjects of the interviews. The strucutre of the conversations was a starting point of a geopolitical discussion on the border space of Mexico-USA, symbolised by Ciudad Juarez. This ties to how women’s bodies have long represented La Pachamama (mother earth, mother of all) a feminine aspect much needed in these ecologically destructive times. All throughout seeing how violence is the fuel of our modern system of depletion and destruction.

The magazine also features references to lesser known/ artists on the rise, political movements and historical literature called “A ROOM FOR THOUGHT”

Rape Scene (1973) was part of series of works devised in response to the rape and murder of a fellow student on the Iowa University campus, where Mendieta completed her BA, MA (painting) and an MFA (inter-media). She invited friends and fellow students to her apartment.
